Interview with Dagmara!

Rex-Bud Construction is created by people. We invite you to read an interview in which you will get to know one of our heroines better!

1. How did your career at Rex-Bud Construction begin?

My adventure with Rex-Bud Construction began about six years ago. While still a student, I took up an internship at a design office, where I was able to gain a wealth of practical knowledge under the guidance of experts. Although it was a demanding period, I have very fond memories of that time, mainly because of the people I had the pleasure of working with.

2. What was your career path at the Company after completing your internship?

After completing my internship, I decided to continue my career in the design department as a Design Assistant. After some time, I took on the position of Construction Engineer, which allowed me to participate in several major projects. I am most proud of my participation in the largest construction project in the company's history – almost 100,000 m² – Hillwood Łódź Chocianowice. Currently, I have returned to work in the office, where I mainly deal with structural design. However, I must admit that if the opportunity arises, I would be happy to work on a construction site.

3. You have been working for us for six years now. What changes have you noticed in the company during this time?

Over the past six years, the company has achieved dynamic growth. This is evident, among other things, in the increase in the number of projects carried out and, consequently, in the number of people in the team, which is growing every year. We are also placing greater emphasis on ESG-related activities, including the introduction of BREEAM New Construction certification in many facilities. In addition, we are constantly developing BIM technology, moving towards the digitalisation of many processes. The company's headquarters have also undergone a change. In 2022, a thorough renovation of the office space was carried out, which included expanding the available space. I must admit that the new interior makes working even more pleasant and comfortable.

4. What were the biggest challenges you faced on the construction site?

The biggest challenge was switching to a completely different work model. From a quiet, typical office job to field work, often in adverse weather conditions. Other challenges I encountered were working with a much larger number of people, managing a large team of people with different qualifications, as well as coordinating work and supervising construction workers. In addition, I had to make quick decisions and meet deadlines despite unforeseen delays, such as bad weather or delays in the delivery of materials. Another significant challenge was the need to adapt to changing project specifications.

5. You have worked both on a construction site and in an office. What are the biggest differences between these working environments?

Working on a construction site and in an office are two different environments. On a construction site, we have dynamic conditions, outdoor work and a fast pace. The main tasks are supervising the work, managing the team and ensuring safety on the construction site. Decisions often have to be made immediately, and any mistakes can lead to delays in subsequent stages. In the office, conditions are stable, and the work focuses largely on planning, documentation, and coordination. The pace is calmer. We have more space to make decisions. However, deadlines and time pressure are also present.

9. What do you like most about working on a construction site, and what do you like most about working in an office?

What I like most about working on a construction site is the direct contact with the project and the opportunity to see the results of my work immediately. Every day on a construction site brings new challenges, which makes the work varied, and the need to make quick decisions develops analytical and communication skills. In office work, I appreciate, among other things, the opportunity to create a project from scratch, the project coordination process, which allows me to expand my knowledge through direct contact with industry designers, solving often unusual problems, and greater time flexibility.

7. What skills did you acquire on the construction site that are now useful in your work at the design office?

Working on a construction site taught me, above all, a practical approach to problems, the ability to make quick decisions and communicate effectively with other people. These skills are invaluable in office work, where you have to coordinate many tasks at the same time. Working on a construction site also gave me a completely different new perspective on design processes. Thanks to the experience I have gained, I can make more beneficial design decisions and work better with the construction team. It is extremely important for every designer to have this kind of experience. This is exactly how it is at Rex-Bud Budownictwo. I regularly visit construction sites, where I have the opportunity to exchange various observations between the office and the construction site.

8. Do you have any advice for young people who would like to start a career in the construction industry?

In short, take advantage of internship programmes. This time is an irreplaceable opportunity to gain professional experience, improve your knowledge and put it into practice. Do not be afraid to ask questions and learn from your more experienced colleagues.

9. How do you manage to maintain a balance between your professional and private life?

I try to plan my tasks so that I have time for both rest and hobbies. After work, relaxation and spending time with my family are important aspects for me. In my free time, I also play sports, which helps me take a break from my daily responsibilities.
