BREEAM certification BREEAM was established in 1990 in the UK and is now one of the most widely used methods in Europe for assessing the environmental performance of buildings. The scheme aims to promote and reward building designs that are environmentally friendly, energy efficient and safe for occupants. How does one obtain a BREEAM certificate? The certification process focuses on many elements of a building such as management, health, comfort, energy, transport, water, materials, waste, ecology and pollution, among others. Each of these areas is analysed in detail and the building project is awarded points for meeting specific criteria. The body authorised to award the certifying certificate is - BREEAM International New Construction for newly constructed buildings and BREEAM In-Use International for existing developments. There are several levels of BREEAM building certification. The lowest level is unclassified, which indicates that a building does not meet the requirements for BREEAM certification.
